ENGLISHAuschwitz-Birkenau (Pol. Oswiecin-Brzezinka), opened May 20th, 1940 and commanded by Rudolf Höss until November 1943 (subsequently by Arthur Liebehenschel), rose next to the homonymous Polish village. In the woods next to Auschwitz I (Stammlager), rose Auschwitz II (Birkenau/ Brzezinka), specifically designed to quarantine and physical elimination of Jews and Romanies in the gas chambers. Afterwards, rose the industrial area of Auschwitz III (Monowitz/Monowice) and 51 sub-camps. In Auschwitz 1000000 Jews were killed. The 60th Soviet army freed Auschwitz on January 27th, 1945.
